Directed by Ernst Lubitsch | 1940
With Margaret Sullavan, James Stewart, Frank Morgan
This outstanding Ernst Lubitsch rom-com follows Alfred (James Stewart) and Klara (Margaret Sullavan), two coworkers in a Budapest gift shop who hate each other about as much as they love the anonymous pen pals they’ve each been writing. The two stumble along a delightfully twisting plot made famous by its star-powered remakes (In the Good Old Summertime with Judy Garland and You’ve Got Mail with Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks), inching toward what the audience already knows—they’ve been writing each other all along!
