National Experts Convene in Harlem

On December 5–6, 2024, Harlem became the epicenter of a pivotal conversation on aging as NYC hosted BOOM! A Silver Dawning in American Cities, the city’s first national conference dedicated to addressing the challenges and opportunities of America’s growing older adult population. The event, spearheaded by the NYC Department for the Aging and Mayor Eric Adams, brought together leading voices in the field to discuss critical topics such as combating ageism, the caregiving crisis, and evolving models of community care.

Powerhouse Speakers and Unforgettable Highlights

The conference featured prominent figures, including anti-ageism activist Ashton Applewhite, New York Times reporter Guy Trebay, ROAR Forward CEO Michael Clinton, and political strategist Luis Miranda. Highlights included clips from Bradley Cooper’s caregiving documentary, in-depth panels on community care infrastructure, and a “Meet the Funders” luncheon offering valuable insights into public-private funding opportunities.

“New York City is proud to lead the national dialogue on aging,” said Mayor Eric Adams. He highlighted initiatives like the Cabinet for Older New Yorkers and the City of Yes for Housing Opportunity plan, which expand housing options for older adults. “This conference is a blueprint for reshaping how cities approach aging, breaking down barriers, and celebrating the potential of our older population.”

Tackling Aging with Bold Solutions

Anne Williams-Isom, Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services, emphasized the importance of collaboration. “With over 12,000 Americans turning 65 every day, NYC Aging is driving efforts to make cities more inclusive for all generations,” she said. Department for the Aging Commissioner Lorraine Cortés-Vázquez added, “BOOM! is a defining moment for aging in America, paving the way for bold partnerships and strategies to support older adults.”

Business and Community Leaders Join the Mission

Michael Clinton, CEO of ROAR Forward, highlighted the economic and social impacts of the aging population. “The New Longevity movement is reshaping businesses, services, and policies,” he said. Allison Nickerson of LiveOn NY stressed the need for bold investments in community care to ensure aging with dignity, while Dr. Joyce F. Fogel of Mount Sinai underscored the importance of ending ageism and fostering inclusive communities.

A Blueprint for the Future

The partnerships and strategies developed at BOOM! aim to set a precedent for aging in urban environments. By bringing together experts and advocates, the event reaffirmed NYC’s role as a leader in reimagining aging and creating age-inclusive cities.
