What Is A Stroke, And How Tradition Home Health Care Can Help!

A stroke is an attack on the brain, and it can happen to anyone at any age, especially your seniors! According to Stroke.com, “It occurs when blood flow to an area of brain is cut off. When this happens, brain cells are deprived of oxygen and begin to die. When brain cells die during a stroke, abilities controlled by that area of the brain such as memory and muscle control are lost.”

Once a stroke occurs and your loved one is in recovery mode, Tradition Home Health Care can help your senior adjust back to living normally at home. Tradition offers a large community of screened and professional caregivers that can assist your loved one with recovery.

58 Year Old Stroke Survivor Finds Happiness At The Canarsie Adult Center

Diane Lovitt is a 57 year old woman who attends the Canarsie Adult Center twice a week to socialize and have fun. Diane has had several strokes, multiple health issues, and she uses a wheelchair to get around, but her health does not prevent her from getting out and having fun!

Twice a week on Thursdays and Fridays, you can find Diane at the Canarsie Adult Center enjoying her day. “I get here and do things, and do things that people didn’t think I could do. I color, socialize, I have lots of friends. Being home keeps me in the bed, not motivated”, says Diane. The Canarsie senior center gives her relief, and an escape from the harsh realities of dealing with her health issues. “I play bingo here, I dance, play a lot of games here that I win, I have so much fun!”

Diane also had an operation done on her left hand, which mean she now temporarily only has her right hand until she gets her prosthetic replacement. “I’m a walking testimony, I write with my right hand, color with my right hand, I was left handed. I do everything for myself, I put my clothes on by myself.” Diane has 7 kids who help her on a daily basis, as well as two caregivers to help her with her daily tasks. Diane makes sure to keep a light spirit at all time. “My kids are proud of me, I’m not a person that sits around and stay sad.”

Overall, Diane enjoys visiting the Canarsie Adult Center. “All of these people here are good people” she says. “Its like God gave me an opportunity to shine, and I’m shining!”

1,000 Affordable Senior Apartments To Be Built in East New York and Brownsville

This News Sponsored by “Seniors Day” at the Healthy NYC Expo (Brooklyn) Saturday Sept. 8, 2018, in East New York. Seniors are encouraged to attend.

New York State Homes and Community Renewal will finance 1,000 affordable homes for seniors on underutilized land owned by the New York City Housing Authority in Central Brooklyn as part of his $1.4 billion Vital Brooklyn Initiative. The newly constructed, 100 percent affordable housing developments will be made available to NYCHA residents and other seniors, and financed with up to $15 million in Federal 9 percent Low Income Housing Tax Credits.

“Every New Yorker deserves access to safe, affordable, clean housing — it is the foundation of our comprehensive efforts to address chronic disparities in Central Brooklyn,” Governor Cuomo said. “This investment will seize the potential of vacant properties and help 1,000 seniors move into quality living environments and support our efforts to improve wellness and opportunities in these communities.”

The Governor’s investment builds off of and credits decades of community-led development efforts in Central Brooklyn to preserve affordable housing and increase homeownership. Community-based organizations like the East Brooklyn Congregations bring together congregations, schools, homeowners associations, and local residents in the Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brownsville/Ocean-Hill, Bushwick, Crown Heights and East New York neighborhoods. This local leadership provides an opportunity for residents to have a voice in decision making about what happens in their community.

The 1,000 affordable senior apartments announced by the Governor today, proposed for the underutilized NYCHA property in Central Brooklyn will be reviewed on a rolling basis by HCR as NYCHA makes properties available through its disposition process. Federal regulations require NYCHA to get tenant feedback, and publish disposition plans annually before allowing for development.

After a development is selected by NYCHA for a site in Central Brooklyn and it has received public input and been reviewed, it will be able to apply to HCR for the $15 million set aside of federal 9 percent federal low-income housing tax credits. Tax credits are the primary tool used to lower the financing costs for housing developments to make them affordable.

Since 2011, HCR has provided financing to create or preserve 14,600 affordable homes in Brooklyn with an investment of almost $2 billion in HCR resources.

Senator Roxanne Persaud said, “From affordable homes for our seniors, to healthy food and community gardens, Governor Cuomo is tackling every angle of community revitalization. I look forward to seeing Central Brooklyn grow and prosper as these investments deliver for our community.”

Assemblywoman Latrice Walker said, “Our seniors are essential members of our community and helping them move to safe, affordable homes is certain to help them, and all of our neighbors, prosper. I am thankful that in Governor Cuomo we have a leader who understands how we must approach community revitalization from every angle.”

New York City Councilmember Alicka Ampry-Samuel said, “Addressing the needs of  New York’s most vulnerable  residents requires dedication, commitment  and direct financial investment. Governor Cuomo has proven to be a leader, committed to NYCHA residents and our seniors. I’m glad to see dedicated funding for the development of 1,000 units of senior housing, in Brooklyn, with Low Income Tax Credits and I look forward to identifying the appropriate land with the support, voice and vision of the community.”

78 Year Old Senior Learns To Read And Write English For The First Time At The Canarsie Adult Center!

Marie St. Surin is a 78 year old senior that comes to the Canarsie Adult Center 3 days a week. Marie comes to practice learning and writing English, and to also socialize with the other seniors. She has been coming to the center for about four years now, and when she first started coming, she only spoke and understood her native language, Creole/French.

Marie met one of the nurses in the center, Myrlaine Zama, and started to take English comprehension, reading and writing courses from her. Myrlaine states that when she first met Marie, Marie only knew how to sign her name with an “X”, and now since she has been teaching and giving her homework and work to do at the center, Marie now writes full sentences! “She’s very patient and she loves to learn”, states Myrlaine about Marie. “I gave her homework in a notebook to do at home. She learned how to write the weather, she writes in a calendar. I’m very proud of her”.

During my interview with Marie and Myrlaine, Myrlaine supported Marie as her English translator. When Marie knew that she had the opportunity to talk about her teacher/friend Myrlaine and the adult center, she became very excited! “Myrlaine encourages me, she does a lot to help me to sign my name, but sometimes I can’t remember”, Marie says with a smile and laugh. “Again, I have to say thank you, and I like to come to this center.” We both smile and thank each other for the brief meeting and interview. It is an understatement that the Canarsie Adult Center has changed Marie’s life for the better.

Bare Snacks Bakes Partnership with the Healthy NYC Expo Series of Events

Bare Snacks, which was recently acquired in May of this year by PepsiCo, has officially come on board as a premium product partner of the Healthy NYC Expo series of events. PepsiCo’s purchase of Bare shows their commitment to investing in healthier snacking options, expanding its ‘better-for-you portfolio’, which falls under an initiative it calls “Performance with Purpose.”

“For nearly a dozen years, PepsiCo has been committed to Performance with Purpose, our vision of making more nutritious products, while also reducing added sugars, salt, and saturated fat. Bare Snacks fits perfectly within that vision,” said Indra Nooyi, chairman and CEO of PepsiCo in her statement announcing the decision.

Bare Foods was founded in 2001 by a family-owned farm in Washington state that decided to sell baked apple chips at local farmers’ markets. The company has since expanded into banana and coconut chips, as well as its most recent endeavor of selling baked vegetable chips.

“We’re excited to introduce healthy snacking options to the Healthy NYC Expo attendees, and I thank Bare Snacks and PepsiCo for supporting our citywide initiative”, stated Vernon Jones Jr., COO of JIG Media.

CDPAP For Seniors: How Your Senior Can Receive A Personal Assistant!

CDPAP is a program offered by Tradition Home Care, and it is a program geared towards seniors who need help doing tasks throughout their day! CDPAP stands for “Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Program” and it allows physically disabled or chronically ill seniors the option to obtain services from multiple personal assistants.

HOURLY RATES/PERSONAL ASSISTANTS:
There is no training to become a personal assistant for your senior, but there is an application process. The salary is $13/hourly, and the minimum of hours that the assistant will receive for work depends on what their senior patient is approved for. When your senior decides to apply for Tradition’s CDPAP program, he/she must have 2 personal assistants complete a CDPAP application. Depending on the amount of hours the senior is approved for, the PA’s will split the hours into shifts. It is also good to have 2 PA’s just incase one falls sick, because Tradition will not be able to send a replacement.

HEALTH PLAN:
If Tradition is not affiliated with the health plan that the senior currently has, they are still allowed to participate in the CDPAP program. To receive the services, the senior would have to agree to changing MLTC (Managed Long Term Care) plans.

For more information and questions on CDPAP, contact Tradition Home Care.

HealthyNYC Caregivers Appreciation Month for Family Members Who Take Care of Loved Ones

Today it was announced by New York for Seniors, that August is now officially ‘HealthyNYC Caregivers Appreciation Month’.

“We concentrate on our seniors in New York City, but we realize that their adult children play an extremely important role in their lives. These adult children, in many cases do not think of themselves as caregivers. We found that many people only think of caregivers in terms of nurses, home aides or others in the healthcare profession”, stated Wayne Jordan, Director of New York for Seniors. “We want to recognize the family members, who are indeed caregivers, and we want to educate them about the resources that are available to them and their parents or elderly family members. Naming August as HealthyNYC Caregivers Appreciation Month allows us to put focus on the caregiver’s role as it pertains to supporting New York City’s seniors.”

One of the resources that will be made available to family members as caregivers, will be the HealthyNYC Expo, which will include representatives from home care agencies, healthcare professionals, transportation resources, city agency representatives and more.

“Most caregivers fly under the radar, providing mostly uncompensated care to their loved ones, and the service may be under appreciated. By New York for Seniors creating a Caregivers Appreciation Month, the services of the family member is brought to the forefront”, stated Maria Pollack, VP Community Relations Tradition Home Care.  “This initiative allows us to celebrate their continuous dedication to their work.”

As part of ‘HealthyNYC Caregivers Appreciation Month’, New York for Seniors will host the ‘Senior Pavilion’ section at the HealthyNYC Expo (Brooklyn) and the HealthyNYC Expo (Governor’s Island). The ‘Senior Pavilion’ will have extensive resources available for seniors. Home Care agency representatives will be on hand to answer questions about home care services, NYC Dept of Finance will be present to discuss how seniors can freeze their rent in NYC and there will be information on how family members can be paid for caring for loved ones. Besides the multitude of resources, there will also be plenty of entertainment, exercising, DJ, refreshments and giveaways.

The Healthy NYC Expo will include the following activities;

  • Free Total Body Conditioning Movement class (Alwayz Fit 4 Lyfe)
  • Senior Pavilion Section (Free refreshments for seniors and giveaways from partners)
  • Fresh fruit and smoothies
  • DJ
  • Health Screenings
  • Giveaways
  • More….

The HealthyNYC Expo is FREE for attendees. You can Register Here.  There are opportunities available to become a sponsor, tabling vendor or community partner. Contact Vernon Jones Sr., at 718-285-9351 or email [email protected].

Brownsville To Get Its Own Digital Media Platform

JIG.Media, owners of EastNewYork.com, BrooklynBuzz.com, TodaysHipHop.com and more, will be launching the official digital media platform for Brownsville Brooklyn. The CEO of JIG.Media, Vernon Jones, who grew up in Brownsville and East New York, stated, “we own a lot of digital media properties, but EastNewYork.com, and BrownsvilleNews.org are the most important to me, personally, because these are the neighborhoods that gave me the grit to work hard and compete in the ruthless business world.”

Jones added, “We have over 20,000 members on our EastNewYork.com website, and we expect to reach that number in Brownsville quickly, because of the demand for such a platform. With all of the development and progress happening in Brownsville, this is an opportunity for us to spread the word quickly, about programs and opportunities that are becoming available to community residents. I heard someone recently call Brownsville a “digital desert”, and I took that as a personal insult, as a person who grew up in Brownsville.  That statement motivated me to expedite the launch of BrownsvilleNews.org, in part to prove that person wrong. We knew we were going to launch BrownsvilleNews.org two years ago, and I spoke to community organizations at that time about the concept but they didn’t understand the importance and value. Now we have a strong community partner, who we will name later. This partner, also a product of Brownsville, immediately understood the importance and value, which is what we were looking for. As a rule we don’t sell people on our ideas, because if they don’t get it then we really would rather not work with them. We work with people and companies that get it.”

The digital media platform will include information on housing, employment, development, shopping, senior resources, culture, events, and more.

BrownsvilleNews, org is looking for additional community based organizations, elected officials and businesses, in Brownsville, to become partners. You are encouraged to contact JIG only if you “get it”. To become a partner contact [email protected] or call 718-285-9351.

JIG.Media plans to launch BrownsvilleNews.org in late August or early September. The launch will include a community event, of which Brownsville stakeholders and community residents will be invited.  To get invited to the launch event send an email to [email protected]. Be sure to include your email address, name and put “Brownsville” in the subject line.
