First Cases of West Nile Virus in NYC for 2025: Prevention Tips and Information

A notice published on NYC Newswire says, the NYC Health Department confirmed two human West Nile cases in Queens as the first this season. Mosquito pools from each borough have tested positive for the virus since July.

Two Illnesses Found, More Being Investigated

West Nile fever was diagnosed in one person, who was shortly hospitalized and has recovered. A second individual is still in the hospital after being diagnosed with West Nile neuroinvasive disease (encephalitis). The virus also surfaced in blood donations given by Brooklyn and Staten Island residents. Two Brooklyn residents have suspected cases under investigation.

Mosquito Spread Citywide

Mosquitoes infected with West Nile are active across NYC from May to October, particularly in August and September. On August 22, 2025, 988 mosquito pools had positive results, fewer than the same point last year. City health teams have conducted 10 adulticide sprays, 3 aerial larvicide efforts, 2 catch basin larvicides, and 1,104 ground larvicides so far.

Commissioner’s Advisory

“West Nile can cause dangerous illness, with those over 55 and the immunosuppressed at highest risk,” declared Acting Health Commissioner Dr. Michelle Morse. “Choose EPA-registered repellent, cover up at dawn/dusk, drain standing water, and check your window screens.” For updates, use the NYC Health online map.

Symptoms and Complications

Most infections show no symptoms, but fever, headache, muscle aches, and fatigue can occur. About 1 in 150 infections, mostly among older or immunocompromised people, advance to West Nile neuroinvasive disease with life-threatening brain or spinal cord disorders.

West Nile in NYC: Background

West Nile was first found in the city 25+ years ago. From 2012–2021, annual diagnoses of the neuroinvasive disease averaged 16, rising to 31 cases per year from 2022–2024. Lack of repellent use was common among patients.

Prevention Steps

Officials recommend EPA-approved products (DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, IR3535), long sleeves and pants in mosquito hours, avoiding outdoors if at high risk, patching window screens, and clearing away water. For approved repellents, check the EPA search tool.

Powerless in Brooklyn: Heat Wave Overwhelms Con Edison System

As Brooklyn experiences its first major heat wave of the year, Con Edison is taking proactive measures to protect the power grid. The utility company is requesting that over 117,000 customers in specific Brooklyn neighborhoods reduce their electricity usage while crews work to repair damaged infrastructure. This call for conservation comes as temperatures are expected to soar, with the heat index forecast to reach as high as 110 degrees on Tuesday. The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat warning for New York City through Wednesday, with high temperatures expected to hover near 100 degrees. Con Edison has implemented an 8% voltage reduction in two heavily populated areas of northern and eastern Brooklyn: Bedford-Stuyvesant, Bushwick, Greenpoint, and Williamsburg. The first affected zone is approximately bounded by the Brooklyn-Queens border and Newtown Creek to the north, Fulton Street to the south, the borough line to the east, and Graham and Throop avenues to the west. The second region spans from Fulton Street south to Clarendon Road, and from New York Avenue east to Alabama Avenue. This voltage reduction is a preventive measure designed to protect the utility’s electrical equipment and maintain service reliability during the extreme heat. To help alleviate the strain on the grid, Con Edison is asking customers in these areas to limit their use of energy-intensive appliances such as washing machines, dryers, and microwaves. Reducing air conditioning usage is also crucial. Residents are advised to use only one air conditioning unit and set it to the highest comfortable temperature. Electric vehicle owners are asked to avoid charging their vehicles unless absolutely necessary. These conservation efforts are essential to allow utility workers to complete necessary repairs and restore full service to the affected areas. In response to the heat, Brooklyn residents are turning to cooling centers, beaches, and playground sprinklers for relief. City officials are urging residents to stay indoors during peak heat hours, drink plenty of water, and check on their neighbors, especially the elderly and medically vulnerable. Emergency Management is coordinating with Con Edison to monitor the situation and provide support as needed. Con Edison emphasizes that the voltage reduction is contained to the specific areas under voltage reduction and is not affecting the broader grid. Customers can report outages or check the status of repairs by visiting the Con Edison website, using the Con Edison mobile app, or calling 1-800-75-CONED. Understanding the reasons behind the voltage reduction and the importance of energy conservation can help Brooklyn residents contribute to grid stability during this challenging heat wave.

Cuomo Racks Up Endorsements for NYC Mayor, but His COVID Nursing Home Scandal May Overshadow His Bid?

Brooklyn Democratic Leader Backs Cuomo

Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is actively securing endorsements in his bid to become New York City’s next mayor. Notably, Assembly Member Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn, leader of Brooklyn’s Democratic Party, recently announced her support for Cuomo, emphasizing his leadership experience during challenging times.

Bichotte, whose husband, Edu Hermelyn, is working on Cuomo’s campaign through his role as a senior vice president at consulting firm Mercury, said in a statement, “Cuomo not only has the right leadership skills but has an extensive plan with a strong network of support to tackle the unique issues and crises our city is facing today.”

The Shadow of the Nursing Home Scandal

However, Cuomo’s candidacy is overshadowed by controversies from his tenure as governor, particularly his administration’s handling of nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic. A directive issued on March 25, 2020, mandated that nursing homes admit COVID-19 positive patients, a decision critics argue led to thousands of fatalities among seniors.

Attorney General Report Exposes Undercounting of Deaths

A probe by Attorney General Letitia James’ office revealed in January 2021 that the governor’s administration underreported the nursing home death count by more than 50%—from 8,711 to over 13,000.

The 76-page report surveyed 62 nursing homes and found that the state had undercounted the fatalities there by an average of 56%.

Calls for Accountability and Criminal Prosecution

These revelations have led to calls for accountability. According to a House Select Subcommittee report, Cuomo was referred for potential criminal prosecution for allegedly making false statements to Congress about his administration’s actions during the pandemic.

Families of nursing home victims have been vocal in their opposition to Cuomo’s mayoral bid, urging voters to reject his candidacy.

“Cuomo lied before Congress,” said Tracey Alvino, director of Voices for Seniors, whose father died from COVID in a nursing home. “It’s a crime. It’s proven by the emails. He should be prosecuted. I would love to see him in an orange jumpsuit.”

Endorsements Come with Political Risks

Elected officials and unions endorsing Cuomo must navigate potential backlash from their constituencies and members, balancing the former governor’s political influence against the controversies surrounding his past decisions.

Will Voters Overlook Cuomo’s Controversial Past?

As the mayoral race intensifies, voters are tasked with evaluating candidates’ past actions and current endorsements. Cuomo’s ability to overcome the shadow of the nursing home scandal remains uncertain, and whether his accumulating endorsements will suffice to secure victory is a question only the electorate can answer.

New York State Boosts Heating Aid for Seniors Amid Affordability Crisis

Governor Kathy Hochul on Monday signed a new bill that will improve access to the Home Energy Assistance Program for seniors across New York State.

The legislation mandates the Department of Health to provide Elderly Pharmaceutical Coverage Program beneficiaries with enrollment information and annual notices to improve access to critical heating services and related costs during the winter months, according to a press release.

Hochul said the relief program, dubbed HEAP, was in response to the “affordability crisis” affecting many New Yorkers struggling with essential heating costs, among others.

HEAP provides up to $996 in heating assistance for eligible households. It has delivered over $397 million to New Yorkers this year, supporting seniors and low-income families with energy costs.

“Programs like HEAP help put money back in the pockets of hard-working New Yorkers, helping heat their homes in the dead of winter,” Hochul said. “From raising the minimum wage to our proposed inflation refund checks, we’re doing everything we can to tackle the affordability crisis head-on.”

Barbara C. Guinn, the assistance commissioner of the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, applauded the new law.

“HEAP is a vital lifeline for low-income working families and older adults on a fixed income and also provides financial support to ensure those in emergency situations can keep the heat on and keep their homes warm during the cold winter months,” she said.

Brooklyn Men’s Group Brings Connection And Community to Older Residents

By: Moses Jeanfrancois

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many observed that loneliness became a parallel epidemic in 2020. Now, in the post-pandemic era, a New York City healthcare provider is prioritizing innovative ways to help older men in Brooklyn reconnect with their communities.

RiverSpring Heath Plans, a Bronx-based healthcare provider that specializes specifically in long-term care, started to organize meetings this year in Midwood to combat isolation among older men.

“It’s important that RiverSpring’s programming not only covers physical health… but also offers an opportunity to boost mental wellness and address psychological needs,” said Marc Frederic, a licensed clinical social worker with RiverSpring in charge of putting together the meetings.

Loneliness can be associated with higher risks for high blood pressure, weakened immune function, anxiety, depression, and cognitive decline, according to the National Institute on Aging.

The idea for a men’s group first started in the Bronx in 2022, where RiverSpring has a large membership group. Since October, a new group meets at 1630 E. 15th St., where participants from various parts of Brooklyn come together to chat with one another once a month. The meetings are not necessarily structured, nor do they have specific topics the group must talk about. But the emphasis is on the simple fact that conversation among people and peers are important and must occur on a regular basis.

“There’s no topic that’s off limits. We found that this has been therapeutic, especially when the participants know they are all dealing with the same type of issues, whether it’s medical, personal [or] telling old stories,” said Frederic.

Brian Hectman, a Sheepshead Bay resident, was asked by Frederic to join the group at its inception. “I said, ‘Why not?’ I like meeting people,” said Hectman, 67.

He said he appreciates the fact that every person can just be themselves during the meetings.

The meeting’s prime objective is to combat loneliness among senior men, a group that often gets overlooked, according to Frederic. “Men have needs that are not always recognized – particularly older men,” said Frederic.

Slightly more than one in every five men ages 65 to 74 live alone, according to 2022 Census Bureau data. That rises to nearly one in four men for those 75 or older. In 2000, one in six older men lived by themselves. In a 2023 report, the U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek H. Murthy called loneliness and isolation an epidemic.

RiverSpring started the meetings by targeting older men, but also has included younger middle-aged Brooklynites, including 47-year old Curtis Alexander, an East Flatbush resident.

RiverSpring is looking to organize more groups in other boroughs. The meetings can provide a holistic alternative that leads to better health in older Americans, Frederic said.

“I truly believe, when you are connected socially, that has a positive health outcome,” he said.

Health Equity Among Uninsured Program for New Yorkers Highlighted As National Model by NYC Health + Hospitals’ NYC Care

Content Distributed by NYC Newswire

NYC Health + Hospitals’ NYC Care program has released two significant observational studies that highlight its effectiveness in improving the health of uninsured patients. The studies, published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine (JGIM) and the Journal of Public Health Management & Practice (JPHMP), showcase NYC Care as a national model for municipalities aiming to enhance healthcare access for uninsured populations.

The research demonstrates NYC Care’s success in various areas, including enrollment, service utilization, chronic disease management, and overall implementation. NYC Care’s patient-centered approach simplifies the steps to affordable healthcare, builds trust with hard-to-reach populations through public awareness campaigns, and prioritizes accessibility to health services. As a result, NYC Care members experience a level of care comparable to Medicaid enrollees.

Key Findings: Increased Access and Improved Health Outcomes

The study published in JGIM utilized statistical analysis to compare NYC Care patients with Medicaid patients. Controlling for sociodemographic factors, the results showed NYC Care members had a higher rate of primary care usage, similar emergency department usage, and fewer hospitalizations. This demonstrates that the program successfully promotes preventive healthcare while keeping high-cost services low.

Additionally, the research highlighted that NYC Care members utilized services extensively: 83,003 members completed an average of 2.4 primary care visits and 3.9 specialty care visits. Chronic disease management outcomes were comparable to those of Medicaid patients, with 50.7% of NYC Care members with diabetes achieving a hemoglobin A1c level below 7.0%, and 75.2% of hypertensive members maintaining blood pressure levels under 140/90 mmHg.

These findings illustrate that municipalities, in the absence of increased health insurance access, can use programs like NYC Care to improve care and outcomes for uninsured populations.

Leadership Speaks Out on NYC Care’s Impact

“Health care is a human right,” said Anne Williams-Isom, Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services. “With over 145,000 enrollees, NYC Care is a model that other cities can adopt to expand healthcare coverage options for their residents.”

Mitchell Katz, MD, President and CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals, echoed this sentiment, saying, “NYC Care has improved the health of countless New Yorkers and their families, proving that health care is a human right. The release of these studies will hopefully inspire other municipalities to adopt similar programs.”

Ted Long, MD, MHS, Senior Vice President for Ambulatory Care and Population Health at NYC Health + Hospitals, emphasized that NYC Care’s success in controlling chronic diseases and reducing hospitalizations demonstrates the program’s value. “This research shows that other municipalities can create similarly impactful programs, moving toward treating healthcare as a human right for all Americans,” he added.

A Broader Vision for Expanding Health Access Nationwide

Jonathan Jiménez, MD, MPH, Executive Director of NYC Care, expressed his pride in the program’s success. “This success should not be limited to New York City. As long as there are individuals excluded from health insurance, comprehensive healthcare access programs like NYC Care are essential.”

Support for NYC Care also comes from the NYC Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs. Commissioner Manuel Castro highlighted how NYC Care’s preventative services are reducing reliance on emergency care, benefiting both individuals and the community.

Grassroots Support and Community Impact

Lorena Kourousias, Executive Director of Mixteca, praised NYC Care for its focus on affordable and community-centered healthcare solutions. “We’ve seen firsthand how simplifying access to health care and building trust with immigrant populations can lead to healthier communities,” she said.

Hager Shawkat, MPH, Program Director of Sauti Yetu Center for African Women and Families, emphasized the importance of prioritizing immigrant communities’ health needs, stating that NYC Care uplifts the health and wellness of the entire city.

National Implications for Healthcare Access

While NYC Care has been a resounding success, the studies point to a larger issue in the U.S. healthcare system. Despite the uninsured rate dropping to a historic low of 7.7% in early 2023, undocumented adults remain disproportionately uninsured, with rates reaching up to 50%. Community health centers have tried to fill this gap, but uninsured patients are less likely to receive preventive care. NYC Care’s model addresses these disparities and continues to see significant demand.

Since its launch in 2019, NYC Care has grown to over 145,000 active members, providing over one million primary care appointments, hundreds of thousands of specialty care appointments, and a wide range of women’s, eye, and behavioral health services. The program’s community-based outreach has also reached over one million New Yorkers, facilitating tens of thousands of enrollments.

Embracing Movement: The Importance of Outdoor Activities for Seniors in Spring and Summer

As the weather warms up and the days grow longer, the spring and summer months offer the perfect opportunity for seniors to boost their physical health and overall well-being through regular outdoor activities like walking. Engaging in such physical activities is not just a leisurely pastime; it’s a crucial component of healthy aging.

Health Benefits of Walking for Seniors

Improved Physical Health: Regular walking helps maintain cardiovascular fitness, aids in weight management, and reduces the risk of chronic diseases such as hypertension, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes. It also strengthens muscles and bones, which can help prevent falls and related injuries, a common concern among the elderly.

Enhanced Mental Health: Walking isn’t just good for the body; it’s also beneficial for the mind. Regular exercise like walking increases blood flow to the brain and supports neuroplasticity, which is the brain’s ability to form new neural connections. This can improve cognitive function and has been shown to reduce the risk of dementia and mental decline.

Boosted Mood and Emotional Well-being: Walking outdoors exposes individuals to natural sunlight, which can help fend off seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and boost mood through the natural production of vitamin D and endorphins. The calming nature of natural settings also contributes to stress reduction and a greater sense of well-being.

Social Benefits of Walking

Community and Connection: Group walks or walking with a friend not only make the activity more enjoyable but also provide valuable social interaction that can combat feelings of loneliness and isolation. Many communities offer walking groups specifically for seniors, which can be a great way to meet new people while also staying fit.

Access to Community Events: Spring and summer are bustling with community activities that can be accessed through short walks, be it local farmers’ markets, outdoor concerts, or art fairs. Participating in these events can keep seniors engaged with their community and culture.

Making Walking a Safe and Enjoyable Part of Everyday Life

Start Slow: For seniors who are new to regular physical activity, it’s important to start slow. A short walk around the block is a good beginning, gradually increasing the distance and frequency as comfort and stamina improve.

Stay Hydrated: Always carry water, especially in the warmer months, to avoid dehydration.

Wear Appropriate Gear: Comfortable, sturdy footwear and loose-fitting, breathable clothing can make a significant difference in comfort and safety while walking.

Safety First: Walking in well-lit, populated areas, using walking aids if needed, and avoiding uneven surfaces can help prevent falls and injuries.

Check Weather Conditions: Especially during extreme heat, it’s important to walk during cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late evening, to avoid heat exhaustion.

Incorporating walks into a daily routine is one of the most beneficial habits seniors can adopt for their health. Not only does it enhance physical and mental health, but it also offers great opportunities for socialization and engagement with the community. This spring and summer, take advantage of the pleasant weather to maintain mobility and enjoy the outdoors.

10 Worst Myths About Aging and Longevity

Our ideas about getting older are deeply influenced by societal expectations and misinformation. These misconceptions can harm our attitudes towards aging, potentially impacting our health and longevity. Let’s bust these myths and find healthier ways to approach the years ahead.

Myth #1: Aging Means Inevitable Physical and Mental Decline

Envato

Reality: While aging brings natural changes, the myth of relentless, unavoidable decline is harmful. Yes, bodies change, but that doesn’t automatically equal frailty or debilitating illness.

What to do: Prioritize preventive healthcare, manage chronic conditions well, and actively adopt lifestyle choices that protect both your physical and mental health. This includes nutritious eating for your changing body, finding forms of exercise you love, and practicing good stress-management techniques.

Myth #2: You Lose All Your Mental Sharpness as You Age

Envato

Reality: Our brains undergo changes as we get older. Some processing might slow, and memory isn’t quite what it was at 20. However, our brains retain amazing “plasticity” – the ability to change and adapt.

What to do: “Use it or lose it” applies to your brain! Embrace lifelong learning. Take classes, solve puzzles, master new skills, have in-depth conversations – all of these stimulate your brain and help maintain healthy cognition.

Myth #3: It’s Too Late to Start Exercising Once You’re Older

Envato

Reality: Starting an exercise routine at ANY age yields tremendous benefits. You don’t need to run marathons to see improvements in your strength, heart health, balance, and even mood.

What to do: Find something you enjoy! Start with gentle walks, try swimming or tai chi, join a senior fitness group, or work with a trainer to create a safe, age-appropriate routine.

Myth #4: Older People Become Lonely and Depressed

Envato

Reality: Social isolation and mental health struggles can occur at any age. Aging does not equal an automatic sentence of loneliness or depression.

What to do: Social connection is crucial for well-being. Stay involved in your community, nurture friendships old and new, consider volunteering, or find groups centered around your hobbies. Don’t hesitate to seek therapy or professional support if feelings of sadness or isolation overwhelm you.

Myth #5: Your Genes Dictate Your Lifespan and Health

Envato

Reality: While family history plays a role, lifestyle choices matter far more than we often think. You can’t change your genes, but you hold immense power in how you live.

What to do: Focus on the controllable: Don’t smoke, prioritize nourishing foods, maintain a healthy weight, get regular exercise, and manage stress – these choices dramatically influence your odds of a long, healthy life.

Myth #6: Once You’re Old, You’re Too Frail for Adventure

Envato

Reality: Your birth certificate doesn’t dictate your sense of adventure or desire to explore! There are countless ways to embrace newness regardless of age.

What to do: Plan trips (whether they’re road trips or international), learn new hobbies, find causes that inspire you, step outside your comfort zone, and make new connections with people of all ages.

Myth #7: Older Adults Don’t Have Sex or Intimacy

Reality: Sexuality doesn’t disappear as we age! While physical changes might occur, fulfilling sex and meaningful connection remain possible.

What to do: Communicate openly with your partner about changes and desires. Be ready to adapt and explore. If you have health concerns, talk to your doctor – often there are solutions to support continued intimacy.

Myth #8: Older People Become Burdens to Their Family

Envato

Reality: This myth promotes harmful ageism. Most older adults live independently or with minimal support. Many remain active contributors to their families, communities, and wider society.

What to do: Plan ahead by discussing future wishes with loved ones. Prioritize independence by staying active and building strong social support networks.

Myth #9: You Can’t Teach an Old Dog New Tricks

Envato

Reality: This is nonsense! The ability to learn, grow, and try new things never leaves us. Our brains are designed for adaptability.

What to do: Never give up on your dreams. Learn a language, pursue an instrument, take up a new sport, audit a college course – explore what sparks your mind.

Myth #10: The Best Years of Your Life are Behind You

Envato

Reality: Every phase of life has something to offer. Don’t limit your joy by yearning for what’s passed.

What to do: Find meaning, purpose, and connection in the present. Redefine a fulfilling life for your current stage, appreciate the wisdom you’ve gained, and cultivate relationships that nourish you.

Remember: Aging is a natural process to be approached with curiosity and a focus on well-being. Let’s shed the harmful myths and embrace the opportunities that come with each new chapter!

10 Ways Seniors Can Outsmart Scammers and Protect Themselves

Scammers relentlessly target everyone, but seniors can be particularly vulnerable. Here’s a breakdown of common scams and the smart strategies to protect yourself:

1. Phishing Attacks: Stealing Your Identity Through Deception

Envato

How it Works: You receive an email or text message that looks incredibly official, often mimicking your bank, the IRS, or a well-known company. These messages might claim your account is locked, there’s suspicious activity, or you’re entitled to a refund. The goal is to trick you into clicking a link or opening an attachment. That link takes you to a fake but convincing website asking for login details, credit card numbers, your Social Security number (SSN), etc.

Your Defense:

  • Scrutinize every email and text. Are there typos, weird grammar, or an odd email address? Legitimate companies proofread carefully.
  • Hover over links (don’t click!) to reveal the true destination. Does it match the supposed sender?
  • Never respond directly. If in doubt, go to the official website of the company in question (typing the address yourself) or call their customer service line (look up the number independently).

2. High-Pressure Phone Scams: Don’t Panic, Hang Up!

Envato

How it Works: The caller claims to be from the IRS, Social Security Administration, your bank, or even the police. They invent urgent scenarios – unpaid taxes, compromised SSN, fraudulent activity on your account – anything to create fear and panic. Their goal is to get you to send money (often via untraceable gift cards or wire transfers), or give up personal details over the phone.

Your Defense:

  • Know that no government agency or legitimate company will ever threaten arrest or demand immediate payment over the phone.
  • Don’t engage. Even saying “no” keeps you on the line. Hang up immediately.
  • If truly worried, contact the organization in question directly using their official number from a reliable source (like their website or your statements).

3. The “Something for Nothing” Con

Envato

How it Works: Free vacations, miracle cures, lottery winnings – they arrive via phone, mail, or online ads. Their ‘catch’? Upfront fees, signing up for dubious subscriptions, or providing credit card details ‘just to verify’. Often these things seem small, but they open the door for larger fraudulent charges later.

Your Defense:

  • Remember: If it feels too good to be true, it is.
  • Research before responding. Search online for the company’s name + “scam.”
  • Never give out financial information to claim a prize or as a prerequisite for any offer.

4. “Help! It’s Your Grandchild” – Emotional Exploitation

Envato

How it Works: A caller pretends to be your grandchild or a police officer claiming they’re in trouble. The story can involve an accident, arrest, or unexpected travel expenses. They rely on your shock and concern, pleading with you to send money quickly.

Your Defense

  • Prearrange a code word or security question with your real grandkids that only they would know. Use it to verify any emergency calls.
  • Resist the pressure. Contact other family members to confirm the situation before sending any money.

5. Fake Tech Support: Don’t Let Them In

Envato

How it Works: A pop-up on your computer screams “VIRUS DETECTED!” or you get a call from someone claiming to be “Microsoft Support.” They offer to fix the issue for a fee and might demand remote access to your computer. This is a trick to install malware, steal data, or charge you for bogus repairs.

Your Defense:

  • Ignore scare-tactic pop-ups. Close them immediately.
  • Never grant remote access to your computer to strangers.
  • If concerned about your device, contact a known, trusted technician or your computer’s official support line.

6. Charity Scams: Preying on Your Kindness

Envato

How it Works: Scammers pose as legitimate charities, often after natural disasters or during popular giving seasons. They might use high-pressure phone tactics, or create fake websites or donation pages. Their goal is to pocket your generous donations.

Your Defense:

  • Donate directly to well-known charities. Don’t click on links from unsolicited emails or texts.
  • Research the charity. Sites like Charity Navigator (https://www.charitynavigator.org/) can help you verify their legitimacy.
  • Be wary of pressure to donate immediately, especially using unconventional payment methods like gift cards.

7. Romance Scams: Tugging at Heartstrings

Envato

How it Works: Lonely hearts beware! Scammers build online relationships on dating sites or social media, fostering trust over time. Eventually, they invent sob stories or urgent needs requiring you to send money. Often, they claim to be working overseas or in the military, giving them an excuse for not meeting in person.

Your Defense:

  • Be cautious of intense, quick online romances, especially from people you’ve never met.
  • Look for inconsistencies in their stories or profile. Do a reverse image search of their photos to see if they’re using someone else’s pictures.
  • Never send money to someone you haven’t met in person, no matter what the sob story is.

8. Home Repair Scams: Fixing What Isn’t Broken

Envato

How it Works: Contractors show up at your door offering great deals on roofing, paving, etc. They create a false sense of urgency (e.g., “storm damage”), insist on upfront payment, then do shoddy work or vanish with your money.

Your Defense:

  • Never do business with unsolicited door-to-door contractors.
  • Get multiple estimates from reputable companies you’ve researched. Check licensing and reviews.
  • Get all agreements in writing before work begins, and never pay the full amount upfront.

9. Investment Scams: Promising Too Much

Envato

How it Works: Schemes offering incredibly high returns, “guaranteed” investments, or inside tips. Scammers often target seniors with retirement nest eggs, promising to multiply their savings quickly. They might use slick brochures, fake testimonials, or pressure tactics.

Your Defense:

  • Be skeptical of any investment opportunities that seem too good to be true.
  • Always work with licensed financial advisors. Verify their credentials.
  • Never make investment decisions out of fear or urgency. Take time to research and understand the risks.

10. Medicare Fraud: Bogus Bills for Your Health

Envato

How it Works: Scammers pretend to be Medicare representatives, offering free medical supplies, genetic testing, or checking your eligibility for benefits. Their goal is to get your Medicare number and other personal information, which they then use to bill Medicare for services you never received.

Your Defense:

  • Guard your Medicare number like your Social Security number.
  • Review your Medicare statements carefully for unfamiliar charges.
  • Don’t sign up for “free” offers related to Medicare unless you’ve initiated the contact with a trusted provider.

Key Takeaways

  • Trust your gut. If something feels off, it probably is.
  • Slow down. Scammers rely on urgency. Take time to verify anything unexpected.
  • Talk about it. Share scam experiences with friends and family – it protects all of you!
  • Report scams. Help others by reporting to the FTC: https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/

Remember: You are NOT alone. Scammers count on fear and embarrassment to keep their victims quiet. Know that help is available and you have every right to protect yourself.

The show’s host is Nikki Lucas, who is also the host of the New York for Seniors Health Fairs and moderator for the New York for Seniors Healthcare Panel Discussions. They will be discussing Medicare, Medicaid, Retirement, Generational Wealth, Pooled Trust, Home Care, COVID-19, Healthy Eating and a lot more.

“With the trying times we are in with the pandemic and the anxiety people are feeling, we felt obligated to create a way to bring healthcare resource information directly to the people”, stated Vernon Jones, CEO of JIG Media.

The first guest on the show will be Yvonne Murphy, the CEO of Beacon Eldercare. Murphy is an expert in senior care as it relates to home care, guardianship, preserving generational wealth and accessing services for seniors and caregivers.

We plan to add virtual health fairs to our platform, which will include giveaways, healthcare information sessions, exercise sessions and cooking demos.”

East New York’s Starrett City Area Hardest Hit with 612 Coronavirus Deaths

by Nikki Lucas

The city released a report yesterday that stated there were 612 Covid-19 related deaths within the 11239 zip code area, which includes Starrett City (Spring Creek Towers).

Starrett City has 46 buildings and over 5,000 apartments as well as the highest percentage of people over 65 in the city. . While the owners of the complex have put some provisions in place; masks to seniors and sanitizing buildings,  additional resources are needed for all residents, masks, gloves and  hand sanitizer.

There was an email sent by resident Fran Welsh, asking Spring Creek Towers owners to provide space for a testing site but it was denied. Spring Creek ownership refused to believe that the numbers Ms. Welsh provided in her email were accurate, despite her providing proof from a few reliable digital media sources.

This a family community with lots of children and seniors.  I am extremely concerned about the increasing number the COVID-19 related cases of Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C).  We must improve on being more proactive.

Data released from New York City shows that Starrett City (Spring Creek), the 11239 zip code area, has the highest death rate in the city at 612 cases, per 100,000.

The 10 ZIP codes with the highest death rates are:

  • 11239 Starrett City (Spring Creek Area): 612 deaths
  • 11691 Far Rockaway, Queens: 288 deaths

  • 11354 Flushing, Queens: 241 deaths

  • 10469 the East Bronx: 307 deaths

  • 11224 Coney Island and Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn: 185 deaths

  • 11369 East Elmhurst and Jackson Heights, Queens: 150 deaths

  • 11692 Rockaway, Queens: 77 deaths

  • 10475 Co-op City, the Bronx: 155 deaths

  • 10304 Stapleton and St. George, Staten Island: 150 deaths
