The days of waiting for hours at the DMV are finally over, or, at least, they’re partially over. Many of the New York State DMV’s services are available online. So, simple tasks such as changing your address or paying for a traffic ticket can now be done in the comfort of your own home.    

Some of the online services offered by the DMV can only be done through MyDMV, a secure service that connects the user to personalized services. To create an account, visit, or, simply go onto and click on ‘Go To My DMV’ on the top-right corner. For the application, you must have a New York State ID. This could be either a driver’s license, driver’s permit, or non-driver’s ID. Additionally, you will need the last four numbers of your social security number, and your personal email. All personal information used in MyDMV is protected by the New York State Office of Information Technology Services, and is needed in order to verify that the user is a New York citizen.    

If you already have a ID that you use for other services, then you can use that ID for your MyDMV account. MyDMV accounts are IDs, and can also be used for other services, such as MyTax and Unemployment Benefits.
